Thoughts for an Election Year
October 2004

It is odd how much things can change in four years.
For many of us, our lives forever changed in an instant on a Tuesday morning in 2001. What has occurred since has been an unprecedented hailstorm of 24 hour media alerts, websites bringing up to date information on every story and a totally distracted society. Sadly, though, this is nothing new. That is the times.
What concerns me and should be of great concern to all American citizens, however, is that our politicians now pander to that culture of media saturation and fear. Last night I attended a rally to listen to what keynote speaker, Democratic Vice Presidential Candidate, John Edwards had to say. What I heard appalled me, and I left halfway through the speech. Edwards' speech confirmed what I have believed through this entire election season. The gloves are off. There is no decency to this campaign. Both sides are guilty, and should be ashamed.
Instead of addressing very serious problems facing our country, political pundits and 24 hours news channels feed us garbage to make us think that the greatest threats to freedom right now are the deficit, abortion and gay marriage. The politicians are paying particular attention to these "hot button" issues because that seems to be the only way to motivate people out of their seats to become activists. Come on folks, we can do better. Let's have a real, constructive discussion and leave sensational subjects that have no bearing on the safety of our borders, our economy and other nations to the wayside. These are serious times and it's time to end the mindless bickering that only serves to drive the nation apart.
Whatever happened to United We Stand?
