On behalf of a grateful nation....

Army PFC Marlin T. Rockhold
June 1, 2003
By Matthew McGowan
Some people are just born to serve their country. By all accounts, that would describe Marlin Rockhold.
Marlin Tyrone Rockhold, age 23, passed away May 8th, 2003, in the service of his country in Baghdad, Iraq. He was the first soldier from the tri-state to die in the conflict. He leaves his wife, DaVonna, and an 8-year-old stepdaughter, Therashia.
The Hamilton native has been described as a quiet, cheerful person who had talked about joining the armed forces ever since he was a child. A 1998 graduate of Hamilton High School, he'd married his wife two days before he enlisted in the Army. According to his grandmother, "He felt he wanted to go and do what he could for his country. He was very dedicated."
While I am well aware that no amount of condolences can ever take away the pain of losing a loved one, I would like to express my deep sympathy and great sense of gratitude to Marlin's family. Marlin died a hero, and will be remembered as such by the citizens of our country for all time. Indeed, every time we sing The National Anthem, recite The Pledge of Allegiance, or exercise our rights to free speech and free elections, we will be paying tribute to brave men and women like him who have paid the ultimate price for us all.
America owes a great debt of honor to Marlin, his fellow soldiers, and their families. On behalf of a grateful nation, thank you all, and may God Bless You.
